The Red of Utah

Utah is one of those places where an hour drive can completely change the scenery you were just in. I started south, around the Moab area. It feels like another world, the red glow of the rocks and the way the wind and water has shaped them over the centuries into otherworldly canyons and rivers.

I explored and hiked around, with the highlights being Grand Arches National Park, and a waterfall in a canyon that I won’t dare share the location of to protect the solitude of the place. Petroglyphs can be found on walls, and the whole place has a calm energy.

My favorite thing here is the sunsets. There is this moment of time where the rocks are releasing heat, and the air temperature is slightly cooler. I recall walking in canyons and feeling the warmth of the rocks and the breeze cooling me at the same time. It’s one of the only places I have noticed this and it’s oddly comforting.

Aside from the red of Utah, I explored its mountains and forests, then swung into Salt Lake City to catch up with some friends. We talked stories as we cruised the city, or spent time in the garage on the climbing wall they had built. Thanks to Dylan and his roommates for the housing and laundry. Owen, thanks for the laughs and good times.

I would have stayed longer, but with winter approaching I wanted to get further north before the snow. Saying goodbye to my friends, and feeling like a million bucks with clean clothes, onward I went. The photos don’t do the red any justice, a must see in person if you get the chance!
